some people I know cannot connect to a game when they click on it. It will just keep trying to connect and never actually get into a match.

Neal Clark said...

In response to the first post I have created a Java applet that will attempt to launch BloodToll using a number of different methods. This applet will load the game whenever anyone clicks on the download button. Download Blood Toll

The connect disconnect problem was caused by a case sensitivity issue with user names. The problem has since been corrected. If you are still getting the connect disconnect message ensure that your firewall or router is running the latest firmware and that any software firewall is configured to allow outgoing connections on udp ports 20000 to 210000.

A few of the menu items in the accounts and the help menus rely on Java being able to launch an external web browser. This is accomplished by detecting the operating systems default web browser settings. If Java is unable to detect a web browser these menu items will fail to open a web browser. To resolve this problem ensure that your operating systems default browser preferences and Java installation are correctly configured.

I am giving this a shot, but there appears to be no games available...

also, the performance is really poor - is there anyway to ensure that 3d support is working ok?

I can't seem to find a way to invert the mouse. Is there one? If not, I can not play :(

Ian - I noticed that you submitted that
blog post
I wrote to different social media - hoped you liked it.

Hi Caydel

Thanks so much for taking the time to write about our game. It is really nice to read things written from people who like what we are doing. We have had a mixed response from people so your review was good to see.

Are we going to see a community forum or a regularily updated blog any time in the near future?

Anonymous said...

i might not have found the button for it but, the sniper rifle needs a zoom scope.
yes forums would be nice.

To invert your mouse type t /invmouse 0 or 1. Unfortunately, the mouse invert command is not saved so you must enter it when the games starts. If as soon as the game loads you press t you will be able to enter a command. It's important that you press t after the Blood Toll logo appears but before the buy in option on the buy-in screen is selected. Otherwise just change the setting when you are entered into the level.

To answer caydel's comment when no one is playing you will not see any matches but the servers are still running. Just click the join button and a match will begin. There are usually a couple of people waiting in the lobby for a game to start so if you jump in others will usually follow. Thanks Neal.

I am having consistently terrible pings with ports 20000 - 21000 UDP open and forwarded. Any suggestions on this?

I can't make it work, I enable the ports and try JOIN and nothing happens?

In Response to Alex:

The problem that you are encountering is due to an issue with the games level updating system. This only effected people who downloaded the first two versions of the 1on1 level which were only available for a short time late Friday night. We are currently working on a solution to this. What a few people have found worked is when you click on 1on1 and it freezes leave it for a few mins and see if the program starts responding again. when it unfreezes close the program and reopen it. Then it should re-download the level. The other option is to go into your C:\documents and settings\(your user name)\bloodtoll.com\
resources\worlds and delete the files world-12.bt and world-12.jpg
Hope that helps

In Response to rp:

To really be able to help you I will need to know what operating system you are on. If you could email me the basic specs of your computer. I am sure that we can work out whatever problem you are experiencing. info(at)bloodtoll.com

I have noticed an Obvious but overlooked problem with your security.

Well I tried it out to see if it would work, I created two user accounts on my computer to see if I could run 2 instances of the cube engine on my computer at the same time, and low and behold it worked. Which can be very bad for you.

I suggest programming the game to make it not let you run more than one instance of the cube engine at a time. Or else people will start running like 5accounts on their computer at a time and it would be hectic, and very much against the rules.Programming it to do so would be a simple side job in your development of this game that would not take too much of your time anyways.

Hi Elementis,

We already have software in place to detect when players are fraudulently using multiple accounts. During our beta program we are collecting as much data as possible to train our cheat prevention engine. Currently anyone who has cheated has been accurately flagged by our system. We have not yet automated the process of deactivating accounts that have been found to be in violation of our terms of service so that each account can be manually reviewed.

We prefer to detect cheating by analyzing patterns in game play rather than attempting to detect multiple clients running on a single host as it's quite trivial to use multiple computers or virtualization software achieve the necessary separation to foil a client based approach.

Hey Neal.

The game engine required both libSDL_mixer1.2 and libSDL_image1.2 which I didn't have. No entries in bloodtoll.log - maybe it should log errors from the game engine as well.

Ubuntu 7.04, Linux kernel 2.6.20-15-generic

Regards,
Josh

As everyone else I've talked to, I still cannot get the zoom function to work with the sniper rifle. Any idea whats wrong here?

CapnKirk said...

Also, just a few ideas, but unsure where I should voice them...

1: Speech bubbles above your head when typing, sort of an "in good faith" that you wont get shot when the bubble is there.

2: I know youve mentioned no AI bots already, but possibly 1 in if no one else is gaming. No cash gained if you win, but you do lose cash if you lose against the bot, and as soon as someone else connects the bot dissapears.

3: Functional sniper rifle.

4: More ammo for the machine gun, as its made to shoot lots of bullets, but many arent offered.

5: Crouch feature would be nice.

6: Quad damage might be harder to find on some areas and maybe last a little longer, but also take longer to appear.

I know game is in BETA and is still being worked on, but these are just some opinions I'm tossing around.

Also, if you dont mind me asking, what engine are you using? Homebrew or something used elsewhere? Im too lazy to try to find out myself, and figured id ask. Will you be allowing home made maps in the future, or possibly allowing players to make maps, and email them to you and be uploaded into say a "user maps" button?

Keep up the great work on this awesome game.

OTEL said...

Hi CapnKirk

Thanks for the input and ideas. We are planning on implementing crouching in the new game. The current engine is the Cube engine, but we are using a different one for the full release. We are still not sure if we are going to have an official mapping community. Thanks for the post it is really helpful to get user ideas.

CapnKirk said...

Another thing I noticed is that we need a way to scroll back to see what people have said.
If you guys do setup a mapping community, I have some friends that would love to help in making some.

Neal Clark said...

Hi CapnKirk,

Thanks for the suggestion we have decided to add a chat history scrolling feature into the game. Thanks Neal.

Neal Clark said...

The current version of Blood Toll does not include a zoom feature. Zooming has been in the new engine since day 1 and will be available when the new version is released. Thanks Neal.

Neal Clark said...

Hi Josh,

The Linux version of Blood Toll requires both libSDL_mixer1.2 and libSDL_image1.2. If you are using Linux and the game will not load make sure you have the above libraries installed. These libraries can be downloaded from http://www.libsdl.org/download-1.2.php. Thanks Neal.

Can you please be more specific about what you mean by "proxy". Are you having trouble connecting, or do you no like the lobby where you select matches? If possible can you explain the sequence of steps which cause you problems or what exactly about the game you don't like. Thanks Neal.

Anonymous said...

wow its great to see that you are still responding! thanks, anyways what i mean by proxy is when you are in the game, it always kicks you back to where you just were and that gets very very very very! annoying! also i am not able to connect anymore...anyways the new levels screenshots are looking amazing! when are they comming out?

Anonymous said...

also now it wont even log me in..i created a new account and it still wont work. It just allows me to log in on the site but not on the game...

Neal Clark said...

The reason you are unable to log in is that one of our encryption certificates on our old servers has expired. It was not renewed as the next version of the game will run on a new set of much faster servers. The purpose of the first version of the game was to get feedback from the community and provide a framework on which to develop a more robust gaming platform. We will start accepting beta testers for the new system withing the next couple of months. Check back ever once and a while or send us an email and we will be sure you are among the first accepted into our beta testing program.
